This trip begins with an evening ride along Havana's famed Malecon sea wall. The next day we head west into the Cuban countryside, arriving first at Las Terrazas, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with spectacular hiking and swimming and day-biking opportunities (26 miles). A day and a half later we bike west to overnight in San Diego de los Baños, a small town famous for its mineral baths (47 miles),. The ride from there to Viñales is hilly and beautiful, taking us to an aristocratic estate turned into a national park (La Guira) and the caves that served as Che Guevara's headquarters during the Cuban Missile Crisis (31 miles). The last two days of the trip center in and around Viñales, a region of stunning beauty and tobacco farming. Finally, we'll bus back to Havana for an awesome house party.
After a bus ride from Havana to Santa Clara, this week begins with some serious cycling over the Escambray mountains to Trinidad, a partially restored colonial sugar plantation owners' town and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will visit Cienfuegos, Playa Giron and the Bay of Pigs (snorkeling), and the beautiful beaches of Varadero before returning to Havana for an off-the-charts Cuban farewell party.
Includes one week of bike rental, support bus, mechanic, expert guide, seven nights of air-conditioned B&B lodging (double occupancy), and wholesome breakfasts.
