Havana (four nights): Cuba’s bustling capital, with its classic American cars and the faded, decrepit beauty of its buildings, makes for a powerful first impression. Havana is as vibrant as it is beaten down by time and communism, both characteristics making this one of the most photogenic cities in the world. Cuban art and music will be our front-and-center focus. Visits to art museums and community art projects, salsa dance lessons, Havana's vibrant club scene, and a great party at the home of renowned artist Lazaro Salsita are some of what lie in store. Viñales (three nights): Situated on the edge of a national park, the Viñales Valley is breathtakingly beautiful. We ride horses, visit one of my friends’ tobacco farms, take a day trip to a beautiful beach, Cayo Jutia, 35 miles from Viñales, and generally de-compress in a relaxing and beautiful country landscape.
This trip begins with an awesome house party in Central Havana at the home of renowned artist Lazaro Salsita. The next day we head west into the Cuban countryside, arriving first at Las Terrazas, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with spectacular hiking and swimming and day-biking opportunities (39 miles). A day and a half later we bike west to overnight in San Diego de los Baños, a small town famous for its mineral baths (47 miles),. The following day's ride from there to Viñales is hilly and beautiful, taking us through a lavish and large aristocratic estate, now a national park (La Guira), and to the caves that served as Che Guevara's headquarters during the Cuban Missile Crisis (31 miles). The last three days of the trip center in and around Viñales, a region of stunning beauty and tobacco farming. Finally, we'll bus back to Havana for some city exploration and a farewell dinner.
